Dubai's 1 Billion Followers Summit will award $1 million for the best artificial intelligence-generated film, bringing an AI production competition into an event that will also examine how digital content is becoming a source of income and professional work, according to thenationalnews.com. The AI Film Award will be presented in partnership with BytePlus, a business within TikTok owner ByteDance, during the summit scheduled for January 8–10.

The gathering brings together social media influencers, business leaders, brands and policymakers. About 400 speakers are expected to participate, with a combined following of more than 4 billion people, the report said. TikTok is also partnering to broaden the campaign's international reach. The programme places the film prize alongside discussions about the growing commercialisation of content and the responsibilities of creators whose work reaches large audiences.

Creator businesses in focus

The summit will hold the second edition of its Creators Market, featuring 100 small and medium-sized businesses led by creators. It will also introduce Instagram Creators Day for the first time. That day-long programme will be organised and led by Instagram, bringing together leading creators, industry representatives and members of the platform's team. Both initiatives form part of a gathering that links content producers with brands and other participants in the industry.

Saeed Al Eter, chairman of the UAE Government Media Office, said the summit seeks to establish the UAE as a centre for content creation. He emphasised that creators can influence public awareness, priorities, attitudes and the behaviour of millions of people. That influence, he said, carries obligations towards societies and nations, including sharing reliable knowledge and fostering understanding between people. His comments placed social responsibility alongside the programme's focus on commercial opportunities for creators.

The UAE's social media restrictions for children aged 15 and younger will be another major subject of discussion. The report said the legislation would take effect the following year and would require support from schools, parents and society more broadly. The issue adds a regulatory dimension to a programme otherwise spanning content production, platform partnerships and the development of creator-led enterprises.

Film themes and a separate TikTok prize

The AI film competition sets out seven eligible themes, covering scientific discoveries, civilisations and empires, cultural traditions, inventions, exploration, historical turning points and overlooked stories. The science category asks filmmakers to depict a significant breakthrough, while the civilisations category centres on a human story from a kingdom, empire or defining historical period. Cultural entries can explore the origins or meaning of practices ranging from celebrations and food to art and rituals.

Other categories invite films about the challenges behind inventions or solutions that changed everyday life, expeditions that altered people's understanding of the world, and decisions or events that reshaped subsequent history. The final theme calls for rediscovering neglected people, places, accomplishments or ideas. Together, the categories define the subjects eligible for the $1 million award without restricting entries to a single historical or cultural setting.

Separately, the summit's fifth edition will host the #1MillionStories competition with TikTok. Participants worldwide are invited to make a creative TikTok video explaining how a particular film or television series changed their life. Entries will be assessed on creativity, impact, storytelling and reach. The winner will receive $100,000 from the summit, a distinct cash award from the AI film prize.
