Key takeaways

  • The Dh39 rail ticket becomes an estimated Dh59–Dh61 journey once Metro and Abu Dhabi connections are included.
  • The bus is the cheapest solo option in the comparison, at Dh37–Dh38, taking about three hours to three hours and 15 minutes.
  • Driving costs approximately Dh72–Dh85 in petrol and tolls before parking, or Dh36–Dh42 per person when shared by two.
  • A taxi costs roughly Dh389–Dh398 before waiting and applicable Darb charges.
  • All estimates apply to the Union-to-Hamdan Street route; rail passengers should confirm shuttle prices and availability.

A Dh39 train ticket does not mean a Dh39 trip from Dubai to central Abu Dhabi. For an adult leaving Union Metro station in Deira, connecting transport brings the estimated one-way rail cost to Dh59–Dh61, according to Khaleej Times. The train ride lasts one hour and four minutes, but getting to and from the stations stretches the complete journey to roughly three and a half to four hours.

Etihad Rail began public services from Dubai’s Al Yalayis station on Wednesday, adding another travel choice between the emirates. The newspaper compared rail, bus, car and taxi journeys from Union to the World Trade Center end of Hamdan Street in Abu Dhabi. Its figures cover one adult travelling one way. Journey times include connections and are estimates, not the findings of a timed travel test.

Connections reshape the rail offer

The rail route starts with a Red Line Metro journey towards Expo 2020, ending at Jumeirah Golf Estates. That leg costs Dh7.50 with a Silver Nol card and takes about 53 minutes, before the pedestrian connection to Al Yalayis and time for boarding. A Comfort-class train ticket starts at Dh39. After arriving at Mohamed bin Zayed City station, passengers still need to reach central Abu Dhabi. The calculation uses a previously reported Dh10 shuttle to ADNOC headquarters on the Corniche, followed by a local bus costing approximately Dh2–Dh4 and a final walk. The shuttle requires a reservation through the rail booking system.

For this particular journey, the intercity bus is both cheaper and faster overall. The estimated fare is Dh37–Dh38, with a total travel time of about three hours to three hours and 15 minutes. Passengers take the Green Line from Union to Al Ghubaiba, then the E100 to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station. The Metro connection costs Dh5 and the intercity bus Dh30. A final local bus adds roughly Dh2–Dh3. Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority planner puts the E100 leg at around two hours and 10 minutes, although traffic can lengthen it.

Sharing a car changes the arithmetic

Driving the approximately 150-kilometre route takes an estimated one and a half to two hours. For a car consuming eight litres per 100 kilometres, the trip requires about 12 litres of petrol. Using the source’s October 1 Special 95 price of Dh4.28 per litre, fuel costs Dh51.36, up Dh7.08 from the same trip at September’s price. An illustrative route with four chargeable Salik toll passages, plus applicable Abu Dhabi tolls, brings fuel and toll expenses to roughly Dh72–Dh85 before parking. The amount varies with the route, toll hours and fuel consumption.

Split between two people, those driving expenses fall to about Dh36–Dh42 each before parking—close to the bus fare. But this is not the full cost of car ownership: insurance, servicing and depreciation, or the vehicle’s loss of value, are excluded. Standard public parking in Abu Dhabi adds Dh2 an hour or Dh15 a day. A street-hailed Dubai taxi costs much more, at roughly Dh389–Dh398 including the example’s Salik tolls but excluding waiting and applicable Darb charges. Its estimated journey takes one hour and 45 minutes to two hours, plus pickup time.

For travellers on this route, the choice is less about the headline ticket price than the whole journey. The bus has the lowest estimated solo fare; driving saves time and becomes more competitive when shared. Rail offers an alternative to the road journey between stations, but connections determine its overall value. Before booking, passengers should check the shuttle’s current fare and availability for their chosen train: the rail calculation relies on an earlier reported price.
