Key takeaways

  • IHG has opened its first Voco-branded hotel in Kenya and East Africa.
  • Voco Nairobi Airport Suites opened on October 2 with 112 suites, about eight kilometres from JKIA.
  • The hotel targets business travellers, transit passengers and longer-stay guests.
  • Four meeting and events venues provide 623 square metres of space; Mara Hall can accommodate up to 180 delegates.
  • The opening adds a premium option to a corridor already served by budget hotels and established five-star properties.

Kitchens, laundry facilities and workspaces are part of IHG Hotels & Resorts’ latest addition to Nairobi’s airport hotel market. The newly opened Voco Nairobi Airport Suites has 112 suites, bringing apartment-style accommodation with hotel services to travellers passing through the capital or staying for longer. It is the first hotel under IHG’s Voco brand in both Kenya and East Africa, according to Capital FM Kenya Business (direct).

The property opened on October 2, about eight kilometres from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, known as JKIA. It is also near the Nairobi SGR railway terminus and the Nairobi Expressway. That location places the hotel close to several transport links, while its intended customers include business travellers, passengers stopping between journeys and longer-stay guests using the airport and the Mombasa Road corridor.

A room designed for more than an overnight stop

The accommodation comes in three categories: one-bedroom, two-bedroom and presidential suites. Kitchens and laundry facilities give guests the means to handle everyday tasks within their accommodation, while workspaces form part of the same setup. Those features sit alongside hotel services rather than replacing them, making the combination central to the property’s offer to both short- and longer-stay visitors.

General Manager Amit Sharma described that mix as the hotel’s main proposition. His account focused on the comfort of an apartment and the convenience of a hotel, rather than accommodation alone. The facilities reflect the range of guests the property is seeking: people travelling for work, those using Nairobi as a transit point and visitors needing somewhere to stay beyond a brief stop.

General Manager Amit Sharma said the hotel pairs home-like comfort with convenience for modern travellers.

The opening also marks a regional first for the Voco brand. For Nairobi’s airport corridor, however, the immediate addition is concrete: 112 suites in an area that already offers several types of accommodation. The property joins a market stretching from budget hotels to established five-star properties, adding another premium option along the Mombasa Road and JKIA corridor.

Meeting rooms add a second business focus

Alongside the suites, the hotel has 623 square metres of meeting and events space across four venues. The largest, Mara Hall, measures 235 square metres and can hold up to 180 delegates. These facilities put space for business gatherings alongside the accommodation aimed at business travellers, with four separate venues forming the hotel’s meeting and events offer.

Other facilities include the rooftop Kilimanjaro Restaurant, Savannah Lounge, Cigar Haven, Malt & Mocha café and a fitness centre. Together with the kitchens, workspaces and laundry facilities inside the suites, they show how the property combines self-contained accommodation with shared hotel amenities.

With the opening complete, the next point to watch is the hotel’s place in this mixed airport-area market. Its stated focus is clear: serving business, transit and longer-stay guests with apartment-style suites and meeting facilities near Nairobi’s airport and ground transport links.
